Arthritis and Diet

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. Can I eat curd/rice the so called ‘cold things’ ?
Arthritis is not worsened by curd/rice or the so called ‘cold things‘. However, some individuals do notice that certain food stuffs make their arthritis flare up. In that case, it makes sense to avoid these food items. If you believe a certain food increases your arthritis symptoms, there's no harm in omitting it from your diet to see if it helps. However, do not omit too many things from the diet as the same would reflect on your health later.
There are many diets that claim to cure Rheumatoid Arthritis. Is this true?
Apart from essential fatty acids, there is no evidence that any diet cures Rheumatoid Arthritis. Do not stop your anti arthritis medicines without consulting your doctor. Never start any of these diets without consulting your doctor.
What are the types of diet useful for Rheumatoid Arthritis?
1) Mediterranean diet- this is high in fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals, fish, fish oils & low in red meat. This diet derives its benefit from high levels of unsaturated fats & antioxidants.
2) Elimination diet- One removes the potentially offending food items from the diet. The food items may then be reintroduced to see if they trigger the symptoms. This diet is based on the belief that certain dietary items are responsible for causation of RA.
3) Vegan diet- it is believed to reduce inflammation in the joints.
4) Elemental diet- comprises of the simplest formulation of amino acids, glucose, medium chain triglycerides, vitamins & minerals. This is premade & used to replace one or more meals a day. This is specifically designed to be less allergenic.
Do any food items trigger Rheumatoid arthritis?
Yes. A few food items do trigger arthritis.
1) Citrus fruits
2) Alcohol
3) Chocolate
4) Red meat
5) Spices
Can certain foods help Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Yes. Food rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation. Fish & fish oils are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Linseed oil (also called flaxseed), canola oil (also called rapeseed oil) & walnuts are also good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
What would be an ideal diet for Rheumatoid Arthritis?
An ideal diet for Rheumatoid arthitis should be an anti-inflammatory diet with plenty of fish, whole grains, leafy vegetables, fruits with a minimum amount of meat. Food allergies & intolerances do exist & it is best to avoid food items that trigger the arthritis symptoms. There is no clear-cut evidence to confirm the beneficial effects of any particular diet plan.
