Skin biopsy & lupus band test
How does a skin biopsy help in diagnosis of lupus?
A skin biopsy can help confirm the diagnosis of lupus. Characteristic changes seen in the skin seen under the microscope help in the diagnosis of lupus. It is especially useful when someone has skin lesions in the absence of other manifestations of lupus.
What is lupus band test?
If immunofluorescent stain is applied to the biopsy specimen, then lupus antibodies can be seen deposited in the skin between the dermis & epidermis. The deposited antibodies form a band & hence the test is known as lupus band test. The presence of such a band is another evidence of lupus. This test is positive even if the sun exposed skin from the apparently normal (uninvolved) area is biopsied.
